GOLDEN VISA: what changes?

 

For a while that is known the Portuguese Government wants to make a few changes to the Residence Permit for Investment (ARI) program, more commonly known as Golden Visa.

Since February 12, 2021, the amendments to this program are known, by Decree Law No. 14/2021, which will enter into force January 1st, 2022, without any transition period.

 

What changes afterall?

  1. Reduced territory – only real estate investments are allowed in the territories of the interior, as well as in the islands of Madeira and Azores. The metropolitan areas of Lisbon, Porto and the coastal areas of Portugal are excluded;
  2. Capital transfer increases the minimum of 1,000,000€ to 1,500,000€;
  3. Capital transfer intended to create a commercial company or strengthening a commercial company increases the minimum of €350,000 to €500,000;
  4. Investment in scientific research increases the minimum of €350,000 to €500,000;
  5. Units acquisition in investment funds or venture capital funds increases the minimum of €350,000 to €500,000.

These amendments don’t prejudice to the possibility of a renewal or the granting of visas for family reunification, when the residence permit for investment has been granted under the current law.
